The Brown Bag Series brings world-renowned dentists, psychologists, and medical professionals from research and clinical practice who are actively engaged in the reduction of oral health disparities. These seminars are for students, faculty, and staff to learn about new research done around the world.

Satu Lahti

Senior Research Fellow in Community Dentistry, University of Oulu, Finland

“Treatment of dental anxiety – Finnish experiences from clinical work and education”

Satu Lahti has worked in the field of dental anxiety since 1986 as a researcher and in treating dentally anxious patients. Her research has focused on the dental anxiety and factors related to it among children and adults. She has been responsible of teaching the subject in undergraduate curriculum since 1988. She has also planned and implemented several continuing education courses on the topic for the Finnish dental Society Apollonia and public dental clinics. She is currently in charge of treating dentally anxious patients in the Oulu University Hospital.

In her lecture she will tell about different ways of arranging treatment of dentally anxious patients from public health care settings to University Hospital clinic. She will also share her experiences on including dental anxiety as a topic in undergraduate curriculum and in continuing education.

Dr. Vesa Pohjola is a specialist in Cariology and Pediatric Dentistry. His main research field has been dental fear among adults and he is currently working with a research group interested in dental fear among children. Both these research areas have included oral health-related quality of life. The presentation will review the aspects of quality of life that dental fear may affect when considering oral health and dental treatment.
