Meet Dr. Ozgul Baygin
Dr. Ozgul Baygin, DDS, PHD, is an Associate Professor in Pediatric Dentist at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) in Trabzon, Turkey. In addition, she has been faculty in the Dentistry department at Gazi University and Hacettepe University in Ankara. She’s a member of the Turkish Pediatric Dentistry Society (TPD), the European Pediatric Dentistry Society (EAPD), the International Pediatric Dentistry Society (IAPD), the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (IADH), and the Italian Orthodontics Society (SIDO).
Her fields of study include pediatric dentistry, behavior management, sedation and general anesthesia, oral health and preventive dentistry, and early orthodontic treatment.
Dr. Ozgul’s Visiting Scholar Experience in Her Own Voice
First of all, I would like to thank you very much for giving me the opportunity for a research visitor fellowship program in the DeRouen Center at University of Washington, and it is an honor for me to receive such acceptance from Dr. Ana Lucia Seminario. She is really great professor and so passionate about what does, very supportive, informative and instructive. That was one of the first motivating factors to working at UW. I work as a pediatric dentist at KTU in Trabzon, Turkey. I had limited access and knowledge to meetings, public health and preventive program conversation and epidemiologic research design and methods. I wanted to improve my knowledge in these areas. Also, I had an interest in starting an institutional partnership, multidisciplinary research, and future joint projects with UW.
Initially, I attended most of the classes at UW in the Pediatric Dentistry Department including behavior management and epidemiologic research methods. Also I attended online zoom lecture and UW School of Dentistry Relias learning classes. I learned most about behavior guidance from a child’s perspective and how to control dental anxiety, dental fear, and individual personality in children. I learned important parts of a well-built clinical question and research study design. Also, we started working on my research project under the leadership of Dr. Seminario. The title of the article is ‘Evaluation of dental caries prevalence and treatment needs of 0- to 16-year-old children in immigrant background in the Turkey North-East.’ This article is multidisciplinary research and it will be valuable academic success for my department at KTU. Additionally, I attended most of my classes in Health Science Education. I learned most about dental public health and social determinants of oral health. As I was getting more and more into oral health studies, I began focusing more on my future career fields.
I absolutely loved my entire experience at UW. I’ve never regretted my decision to attend for a second. I love the incredible history in this institution. When you attend here, you find welcome packets. I’ve loved the passionate, informative and instructive professors, comprehensive lectures, unlimited access resource library, and the opportunities it affords both on campus and off. My career goal as of this moment is to complete my fellowship program to the best of my ability. After that I will work on oral health science. I hope to improve and add dentistry skills to my knowledge with the aim to make myself as good a candidate as possible to get a good academic career position in the future.
