Visiting Scholar

Program & Fees

The Visiting Scholars program fee is $1,500/month (subject to change). The fee defrays the administrative and other costs of the Visiting Scholars Program to the Department and the School of Dentistry.  Before any scholarly activities can be formally started, the Visiting Scholar is expected to pay the fee for the entire anticipated length of stay within one week of arriving at the University. Preferred payment method is wire transfer or check.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash or credit card payment.

Fees are not refundable.   A non-refundable processing fee of $800 for the Visiting Scholar (subject to change) is required.  The processing fee covers cost for the J-1/DS2019 visa document through the UW International Scholar’s Office (ISO), criminal background check through A-Check America and associated miscellaneous expenses.   If the Visiting Scholar requires visa for J-2 dependent, an additional processing fee of $400 per family member is required.*

In addition to the DeRouen Center visiting scholar fee ($1500) and administrative fee ($800), the visiting scholars/exchange visitor’s combined sources of funding must also be sufficient to cover expenses (as outlined on the UW Funding for J-1 Exchange Visitors page) and not less than:

  • J-1 scholar: $2100/month
  • J-2 spouse: $1200/month
  • J-2 child: $600/month per child

Please note that institutional, governmental, business, or agency funding must cover at least 50% of the minimum funding required. Before the UW visiting scholar position application and visa application can be submitted for approval, the visiting scholar must provide primary-source evidence from all funding sources showing that it is sufficient for the entire appointment duration. This evidence must be in English and, at a minimum, include the following:

  • Visiting scholar’s name
  • Funding source
  • Exact amounts in U.S. dollars

*There will be a $220 SEVIS fee (subject to change) at the United States consulate when you present the DS-2019 paperwork for your visa issuance that is not part of the fees paid to the University of Washington (as described above).
